I had the time of my life yesterday at our little "wannabe" preschool! I don't know about everyone else, but I think they did. Here are a few thoughts:
Activity: POPCORN CIRCLE- Each mom brought their child's favorite book and we took turns reading the books to the kids in circle time. I also prepared some fingerplays, songs, and a small craft. The link was a
Mix-and-Match Pumpkin Patch game.
Who came: Margaret, Nia, Wes, Rannie, Courtney, Lucy, Willie, Melinda, Aislin, Oliver, Wendi, Pearse, Misako, Michan, Lana, Hereti, Chelsey, Matthew, Bear, Maggie, Caden.
Although the success rate of a circle time is overall pretty high. Most anything you do, is fun for the kids (at least these kids, it is). But there are some things I would think about doing differently a next time. For example, I would have not brought out food right at the beginning, but let them just enjoy the stories... well, thinking about the stories now, maybe I wouldn't have... anyway, read half, then break for snacks, then read the second half, then do songs, or something like that.
The little footstool we had was perfect, it was great! I thought it was a great way to set the tone and give structure to the activity. Wendi pointed out that it also would be great as a time-out chair....hmmm...good idea.
Other cardinal circle time rule that I broke, that I'll be sure to rectify next time is: when you have props for songs, like finger puppets, be sure to not hog all the fun to yourself, but include the kids. Don't worry, they'll scold you if you forget. I can't beieve I forgot this rule, but I obviously did because I got scolded and had to rectify. (PS- I changed the words to some of the songs and didn't tell anyone before we started singing, so sorry about that.)
I've included the lyrics for the songs that we sung, for the moms that came and maybe heard a song for the first time, or for anyone reading and might learn a new song....
Fast/Slow Large Muscle Movement Song:(sung to the tune of Row, Row Row your boat, appropriate actions throughout)
Clap, clap, clap your hands,
Clap your hands with me.r
Clap them fast and,
Clap them slow.
Clap your hands with me.
-Stomp your feet
-Slap your knees
-Pat your head
-Sway your arms
Loud/Soft Voice:
Itsy Bitsy Spider- I think everyone knows the words, but for a second verse tell the children about the itsy bitsy spider's cousin, the Great Big, Hairy Spider who has a loud and gruff voice. Get really into it... my daughter loves it!
5 Little Ducks (fingerplay, hold out hands to count the ducks)Five little ducks went out to play
over the hill and far away (move hand up over head and then behind back)
and the Mama duck said, "Quack, Quack, Quack, Quack"
four little ducks came waddling back.
-then, four little ducks went out.....three came waddling back.
-then, three little ducks went out.....two came waddling back.
-then, two little ducks went out.....one came waddling back.
-finally,
one little duck went out to play
over the hill and far away
and the Mama Duck said, "quack, quack, quack, quack"
No little ducks came waddling back.
The Mama Duck said, (in a louder voice) "quack, quack, quack, quack!!!!"
Five little ducks came waddling back (hand comes back with all five fingers waddling.)
5 Little Monkeys Swinging in the Tree (fingerplay- with my changed words)Five little monkeys swinging from a tree (show five fingers swaying)
Teasing Mr. Aligator, "Can't catch Me." (hold hands to sides of head, like a "nana-nana-boo-boo like action)
(A little slower and gradually getting softer)
Along comes Mr. Aligator, quiet as can be....and....
Snapped (loud clap with hands) at the monkey in the tree!
(Hold up 4 fingers)
-Four little monkeys swinging from a tree....
-Three little monkeys swinging from a tree....
-Two little monkeys swinging from a tree....
-One little monkey swinging from a tree....
(Final verse:)
No little monkeys swinging in the tree
All ran home just as fast as can be (hitchhiker thumb motion over shoulder)
There goes Mr. Aligator, HUNGRY as can be (rub tummy like you're hungry)
Look! (loud clap) Here he comes, after you and me (tickle child)
